Why choosing the right agency is so hard
Every agency says the same things: "we deliver results," "data-driven approach," "transparent reporting." But when it comes to actual delivery, the differences are enormous. Some agencies will transform your business. Others will burn your budget and blame the algorithm.
After running an agency for three years and talking to hundreds of business owners who came to us after bad experiences, I can tell you the seven things that separate good agencies from bad ones.
1. They show results, not just pretty work
A portfolio of beautiful designs means nothing if those designs did not generate revenue. Ask for case studies with numbers:
- ✓ "We increased client X revenue by 150% in 6 months" — good
- ✓ "We built a beautiful website for client Y" — not enough
Specific metrics to ask for: ROAS (return on ad spend), CPA (cost per acquisition), conversion rate improvements, revenue growth, lead volume. If they cannot show quantifiable results, they either do not track them or the results are not impressive.
2. Their testimonials are verifiable
Anyone can write a fake testimonial. Look for:
- ✓ Google Business Profile reviews — public and hard to fake
- ✓ Testimonials with full name and company — verifiable on LinkedIn
- ✓ Ask to speak with a current client — a good agency will not hesitate
- ✓ Third-party review platforms — Clutch, Google, Trustpilot
3. Pricing is transparent
Red flags:
- ✓ "It depends" with no indication of price range — they are hiding high prices
- ✓ Mandatory 12-month contracts — they do not trust their results to keep you
- ✓ Ad spend and management fee are not separated — you do not know where your money goes
Green flags:
- ✓ Prices published on their website (even if just ranges)
- ✓ Monthly contracts, cancelable with 30-day notice
- ✓ Clear separation between management fee and ad budget
4. You know who works on your account
Ask: "Who will actually work on my campaigns?" If the answer is vague, or you find out it is an unsupervised junior, run.
A good agency introduces you to the specialist working on your account and gives you direct access — not just an account manager who relays messages.
5. They report regularly and clearly
- ✓ Weekly reports for ad campaigns — minimum acceptable frequency
- ✓ Monthly reports for SEO and social media
- ✓ Real-time dashboard access — ideal
- ✓ Strategic calls — bi-weekly or monthly to discuss performance and next steps
6. They never guarantee specific results
Nobody can guarantee a specific ROAS. If an agency promises "guaranteed 5x ROAS" or "guaranteed first page on Google," they are lying. Results depend on industry, product quality, budget, competition, seasonality, and dozens of other factors.
An honest agency says: "Based on our experience in your industry, with budget X, we expect Y results. But we cannot guarantee."
7. You own everything
Ask: "If I stop working with you, what happens to my ad accounts?"
The correct answer: everything is yours. The agency works on your accounts, with access you can revoke at any time. Your data, your campaigns, your creative assets — all yours.
If the agency insists on creating accounts under their name, this is a major red flag. They are creating lock-in.
10 questions to ask before signing
- ✓ What results have you achieved for clients in my industry?
- ✓ Can I speak with a current client as a reference?
- ✓ Who will work on my account and what is their experience?
- ✓ How and how often do you report?
- ✓ What exactly is included in the price? What costs extra?
- ✓ What is the minimum contract length?
- ✓ Who owns the ad accounts?
- ✓ What happens if I am not satisfied after the first month?
- ✓ How do you separate ad budget from management fee?
- ✓ What tools and platforms do you use?
Conclusion
Choosing a digital marketing agency is an important decision. You are giving them access to your budget and trusting them with your growth. Do your homework, ask the questions above, and choose someone who demonstrates competence through results, not promises.
